OFS Filter Presses The right machine for your separation purpose!

Principal structure of filter presses

Modern filter presses for cake filtration have a package of filter plates as a central element. The filter plates are covered with textile fabrics as filter material. The filter plate package is located between a fixed and a moving part in a stable frame, the filter press frame. The fixed part (head piece) is linked to the so-called cylinder stand via side bars. For Overhead beam filter presses the closing forces are transmitted via 3 or 4 force transmission elements (overhead beam and tie rods). The filter pack is pressed together by a hydraulic device in the cylinder stand via the pressure piece, thus achieving the tightness of the filter pack. The feed of the suspension is processed through the head piece. Inside the filter pack, the suspension is fed into the filter chambers through openings in the centre of the filter plates.

How the filtration process works

By a pump, the suspension is fed through the inlet into the individual chambers. While the liquid passes the filter medium and runs out via the discharge channels of the press, the solids of the suspension remain in the chambers of the filter plates. They form the filter cake. When the cycle is complete, the operator opens the press and removes the filter cake. Self-cleaning chamber filter presses complete the emptying process automatically. OFS offers corresponding devices for this purpose.

With membrane filter presses, the filter cake can also be pressed out mechanically. Each filter chamber has a flexible membrane for this purpose which acts on the filter cake by means of compressed air or pressurised water after the end of the suspension inflow and provides additional dewatering. Furthermore, membrane filter presses are used for additional process steps, such as washing of the filter cake and air blow-drying of the filter cake to further increase the degree of dry solid content of the filter cake.

Chamber filter presses

Chamber filter presses convince by a relatively simple construction and at the same time high performance in separating suspensions into their solid and liquid components.

Due to their flexibility and simple design, these systems are a cost-effective, efficient and reliable solution for many different applications.

Membrane Filter Presses

Membrane filter presses achieve the lowest values of residual moisture in the filter cakes due to their design. This is possible because of a flexible but impermeable membrane which is attached to a support provided for this purpose and compresses the filter cake in the chamber after the feeding with suspension has been completed.

These properties and the attainable output make membrane filter presses the most frequently used systems for solid-liquid separation of suspensions in the chemical industry. Depending on the degree of dewatering, the inflation of the membranes significantly increases the proportion of dry substance in the filter cake, thus increasing efficiency and productivity.
